Blog Schmog

Yes, the title of this blog is taken from a book by the same name and written by Robert Bly. After reading this book I started being more critical about the blogs I read. Not because the author said to be more critical, but because I love reading blogs and have not given much thought to other marketing and communication professionals that do not share this opinion. Joomla and Drupal: What’s all the buzz?

Ten years ago having a static, brochure-like Web site was acceptable. Today, that is not the case.

However, I regularly see nonprofit directors hesitate in taking on any type of Web site redesign or bringing their Web site management in-house. This truly is unfortunate. The ability to integrate social media, build dynamic online giving campaigns, initiate peer-to-peer advocacy and heighten awareness is not complicated in today’s world of software applications, mobile app building tools, plugins and widgets – many of which are low in cost, even free and easy to manage.

With that said, choosing a strong content management system is critical and I personally think WordPress has a lot of value as a Web site management tool, but two other management tools are quickly gaining a lot of recognition: Joomla and Drupal. (more…)

Jumo: Social Networking for Social Change

The verdict is still out on whether the new social network, Jumo, will succeed or fail. Jumo was launched in November 2010 and is still in the beta phase.

Why users say the site will succeed: Nonprofits need help reaching the millennial generation (those born on or after 1981). These adults are connected online and are looking for ways to reach out to others. But the Internet and technology have failed to grab them in giving back to their community despite efforts like VolunteerMatch and Crowdrise, the social network started by the actor Edward Norton to help inspire young people to donate more. Crowdrise, after all, is less about charities than it is about the people who are helping the charities. (more…)
